Objectives: Teachers will

  • become familiar with ISTE standards and make the connection between ISTE and Common Core State Standards
  • create/revise a lesson to incorporate some of the standards in a more student-centered approach.
  • become familiar with tools that support ISTE standards and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy.

  1. Do a quick read of ISTE student standards

  2. Pick out two-one you are already doing and one you would like to be doing

  3. Watch the video and highlight which skills the students demonstrate in the video

Activity: How the teachers currently promote each ISTE standard:

  1. Teachers regroup to sit with department members.

  2. Using the Google three-column document, record how you currently promote the ISTE standards in student learning activities.

  3. In the third column, teachers record how they could augment or incorporate other 21st century skills in their subject area (concrete examples of the type of learning activity that they could use to promote the ISTE skills).

Activity: Blooms Digital Taxonomy

  1. Teachers list the 10 most common activities that they generally use in the classroom;

  2. They write the Bloom ‘s level associated with the activity.  

  3. They think about a new activity that would require a higher Bloom’s level.

  4. Teachers add a technology tool to support the new activity. (in the next activity)




Activity: Introduction to Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy

  1. Examine websites referencing web 2.0 tools in support of Bloom’s Taxonomies.

  2. Individual exploration of the websites and record the technology that could support the new activity (see previous activity).

Activity: Lesson development-Finding Solutions to Impossible Situations

  1. Teachers revise/create a lesson with the Blooms digital taxonomy and ISTE standards with an eye to the fact that some students will have devices at home and others won’t.

  2. How do ISTE Standards relate to CCSS

  • Teachers use the lesson created/modified and reflect on its presentation and outcome

  • Teachers create another lesson using ISTE standards and Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy in meeting the CCSS.

 

Follow Up Suggestions:

  • Continue discussion at staff or department meetings of the ISTE standards and how to incorporate them in their lesson planning to help students meet CCSS.

  • Begin investigation into problem-based learning (PBL) which supports all: CCSS, ISTE and Bloom’s.

  • Have discussions at staff or department meetings about using Skype in the classroom and investigating the projects identified in the module.

  • Continue Professional Development regarding Blooms in conjunction with Webb’s Depth of knowledge.
